Stepping UP! Beyond Baby Steps…

It’s been 20 months since I was “released” from my job and career of 25 years, and committed to never going back to work for someone else again.

And boy, does that scare me. Still.

In fact, fear stopped me in my tracks again this month, and it took everything I have learned and know to manage that energy in a way that made it possible for me to grow through that fear rather than shrivel up, fall down and never get up again.

If you’ve read my special report, Becoming a Wise Well Woman- How to Baby Step Your Way to More Wisdom, Well-being and Wealth in Your Life, then you’ve read my admission that I am often afraid. Baby Step #7 reminds me to transform my fear into positive energy. Easier said then done, sometimes, I know!

So as I worked through my Baby Steps this month to transform my fear, this time I grew much stronger than I was before, and ready to STEP UP in a BIG WAY! And I know now that that’s how it’s supposed to be.

For a few years now, I’ve been developing my self-care practice, embracing simple rituals, and creating what has become my 12 Baby Steps. And I’ve taken lots of baby steps, forward and back, and then forward again, and some even in circles.

Now it’s time for me to STEP UP, beyond Baby Steps, onto a new level. One of my mentors, Sandy Grason, calls it “Playing BIG!”. Heather Dominick calls it “uplevelling”. Intellectually I’ve understood the concept for a while, but now, I actually see the stairway in front of me, leading to a new platform. And from that platform there is another set of steps, up and up and up.

And the steps don’t stop. They disappear into a wisp of clouds. Clearly, my potential is limitless! And so is yours.

You see, I’m “Stepping UP” and I know that I am called to take you with me when you are ready to go. At each and every step, I will turn and reach back to anyone who has been willing to do the work to get there.

Like me, when you are ready, you will know that it’s time to STEP UP!

How will you know you’re ready?

Your favorite self-care practices are fully integrated into your daily life.

You consciously choose how you live each day.

You’ve developed a network of mentors, gentle guides and compassionate friends and you use them for support!

You have gathered a box full of tools and treasures that provide inspiration and motivation, especially when you feel blocked, stuck or fearful.

You honor your voice and speak your truth boldly, without hesitation.

You can clearly “see” your vision – you can actually see yourself stepping up effortlessly.

You’ve adopted a system and committed to a process to identify and take inspired actions.

You’ve learned how to celebrate and give thanks and you are thrilled to share your success!

Simple, isn’t it?

It’s really all a part of your life’s journey. When you claim the journey as your own, amazing things will happen for you.

Certainly, mastering the baby steps is not easy. It takes time and practice and commitment to change.

And believe me, if I can do it, so can you!

In the spirit of wisdom, wellness and prosperity,

I wish you well-

Celebrate Success, Now!

As September came to a close, and the realization that the year would soon be complete, I began to consider where I am relative to where I thought I’d be, both in my life and business.

And true to old habit, the first thought to come to mind was all that I hadn’t accomplished. Thankfully, before I could dwell on that self-defeating notion, I was distracted by an email I received from Jon Gordon, author of the Positive Business Manifesto. In it he highlighted the story of the success of Bart Connors, Olympic gymnast.

Bart Connors had suffered a significant injury just 9 months prior to the Olympics, and yet he came back to win 2 Gold Medals. When he was asked how he did it, he thanked his parents. Why? Not just because “everyone does”, but because they had taught him he was a success every day of his life.

Beginning at a very young age, they simply put into practice the daily ritual of acknowledging Bart’s successes. Every night before bed, Bart’s parents would ask him what his success was. And as he tells it, “So, I went to bed a success every night of my life. I woke up every morning a success. When I was injured before the Olympics, I knew I was going to make it back because I was a success every day of my life.”

It’s so simple, and yet so powerful!

“Success is a journey, not a destination”, says Ben Sweetland, inspirational writer.

Lately it seems everyone is still struggling to find something positive to think and talk about. And even in my circle of enlightened, heart-centered, energy focused friends, there’s still concern over why things don’t always seem to be improving at the rate we expect. So, we beat ourselves up.

It’s a common thread on discussion boards and studies that women tend to not give themselves enough credit. We are the life givers, the care givers; the one’s who can do it all, right? And when we can’t and don’t we just beat ourselves up, over and over again.

When was the last time you gave yourself credit for an accomplishment without adding a little jab in at the end? The conversation with you sounds something like this, doesn’t it?

“Wow, I finally got that project done, and it looks pretty good. BUT, if I’d only focused a little more it would have been great. Next time, I’ll be sure to work harder to get it right.”

Sound familiar? Why is it that we can’t even stay with the thought of celebration for a minute, without criticizing ourselves?

I call it “Chronic I’m Not Good Enough Syndrome”, and if you’re a sufferer, like me, then it’s time to re-write the script! For too many years I repeated “I just can’t do it” over and over in my head. Where that came from, and why that was, is not my focus anymore, frankly. Now, I choose to know that “I can” and I tell myself that everyday.

How do you do it? Simple. Just like Bart Connors did – with practice and celebration rituals.

Tony Schwartz and Jim Lehr wrote, in The Power of Full Engagement, that to change habits, we should use positive rituals. Thanks to the power of Bart’s story, I’m adding a nightly “success” entry to my journaling ritual.

Affirmations work, too. I read at least one out loud everyday. My favorite: I am enough.

For more suggestions, visit www.vitalaffirmations.com, or write your own.

And then, I’m going to celebrate! My celebration can simply be sharing my accomplishment with supporters in a quick email or phone call. “Just wanted to share my success with you. Today I _________________”.

Celebration doesn’t have to be a party, or food, or a prize or an expensive gift.
Use your senses to make the ritual rich. One woman I read about painted and bedazzled a smooth rock she holds that reads “You ROCK!” Honor yourself by making your favorite bedtime tea or lighting a scented candle. Use music to raise your energy—the song “Celebrate” comes to mind. I know it’s “cheesy”, but it works for me! Create your own symbol of celebration.

Celebrate with joy and do it daily! That’s the hardest part, to make this positive ritual a practice that changes your defeating self-talk forever, you have to establish new programming and language as a habit. And to do that you must celebrate your success every day for 3 – 4 weeks.

Are you with me?

What’s your success today? And how will you celebrate?

I invite you to share your successes with me on my Facebook page, at http://companies.to/wisewellwomen. Visit the Discussions Tab, click on the Topic “Celebrate Success, Now!”, and then “Reply to Topic”.

I celebrate your courage!

Yes, You Can Have IT All!

Do you remember that famous phrase, ladies, “You can have it all!”? Mary Kay has a book by that title, Gloria Steinem encouraged us to reach for it, and even Oprah has been quoted as saying it, “just not at the same time”.

Yes, over the years I have believed I could accomplish lots of things…but what does this really mean, to “have it all”? What is “IT”?

For those of us who came of age hearing that expression in the late 70’s and early 80’s, we charged out to take on life in a way we had never seen women do before (certainly not our stay at home Moms). We became wives and mothers, AND very powerful, successful business women – we were sure we “had it all”! And for my generation, many of us were well on our way to “having it all” by the time we were 30 years old.

And then something a little unnerving started to happen…
We started to sense that something was missing. In the pit of our stomachs we felt it-- we knew we had lost something along the way. We were so busy “doing”, we had stopped “being”. Armed with this realization, we started to eliminate some of the “doing”, and yet we still had no how to just “be”, or who to “be”.

And though I first came to this awareness more than 10 years ago, the topic continues to be a source of discovery for me today. The words you’re reading here began as a journal entry in August ’08, and when the idea came up again last week in my EnergyRICH® Mastermind Group, I felt drawn to re-visit those pages and to share my journey here on this blog.

What does that mean—just “to be”? What do I have “to do” “to be”?

There was a point in my life I couldn’t even sit still for 5 minutes – I had to always be “doing” something. How could I just “be”? And particularly if I was going to continue to “have it all”, how could I just “be”? If I’m just “being”, I’m not “doing” anything, and how can I accomplish anything if I’m not “doing”?

Webster defines to BE as:
to exist; to live; to have a real state of existence for a longer or shorter time.

Ok, that’s easy. Yes, I exist, yes, I am living, yes, I am in a real state…(I think?!)

to be made to be; to become.

Now that’s tougher—to become what? I’d become all those definitions—wife, mother, co-worker, friend, boss…but was that me?

How do I become “me”? Who is “me”?

Were all those definitions—wife, mother, co-worker, friend, boss --maybe all those definitions were “me”? All the stuff that came with those definitions was certainly defined as “having IT all”, right?

So I had “IT” all, but what about “me”? Where was “me” in all that “IT”?

And how could I become “me”, if I didn’t know what “me” was? It couldn’t be as simple as definition #1—to exist; to live-- could it?

So I consulted Webster, again. And Webster defines ME as:
1. the objective case of I, the pronoun of the first person: also used colloquially as a predictive complement with a linking verb (e.g. that’s me).

Well, that was no help!
And I can’t even write down what the Webster’s definition of what “I” is—just trust that it was no help either!

So, I kept on looking for answers…I couldn’t find “me”, and I didn’t understand “to be”…so I had to do what I always did to get “IT” – I had to “do” some more! Sound familiar?

It’s what I now call “seeking”. Since Webster couldn’t help me find a definition for “me”, I started reading everything else I could get my hands on. The list is endless!
Most of you know what I’m talking about …and I kept doing more and more…hoping to find answers. Doing more was the only way I knew how to get “IT”, so that had to be the answer!

Eventually, my “do”-ings turned into utter chaos. My “do”-ings were out of control, and I nearly collapsed from “do”-ing exhaustion. I had this vague awareness that I just couldn’t “do” any more! In the quiet of my exhaustion, a voice in my head said “STOP! You can’t DO anymore!”.

I was still trying to find “IT” so I could have “IT” all. Truth was, I was physically and psychologically unable to continue to “do” much of anything, even when I tried really, really hard.

And the voice again said, “You can’t DO it”.
And drifting off to restless sleep one night, I remember hearing a very tiny, tired voice say, “Just try BEing for a while”.

Frankly, I had no other choice, I could hardly get myself out of bed every day. So I stopped “doing”, disconnecting myself from everything I could, almost completely eliminating my frantic list of activities and responsibilties. But I still didn’t get it…

And I was scared! Wasn’t I going to lose “having IT all” if I didn’t “DO” anything?

And so, even though I had seen a glimmer of truth, I wasn’t convinced. I continued seeking—I just couldn’t believe that the answer to all my questions could be so simple. And I continued to explore this idea of “being”.

That voice in my head said “Just BE for a while…” but I had no idea how to do that!

So back to the library I went… to continue my search to find out just how to “be”, to define “me”.

Remember that Webster’s definition of “ME”—no help, right?

If I’m going to “be”, then I have to “be” something, and that something I want to be should be “me”. But how am I going to define “ME”?

By now I had figured out that I could no longer define myself by things I “DO”. Honestly, at this point though, I couldn’t imagine defining myself in any other way. Thankfully, my incessant seeking had led me to some amazing women who were speaking in sentences that didn’t start with “I do this…” or “I do that…”. They were using expressions that started with “I AM…”

I AM beautiful, I AM compassionate, I AM honest , I AM trusting, I AM joyful.

The first time I tried to make a list like this I broke down and cried uncontrollably. I couldn’t do it. My “do”-ings had never required having a definition of “me” to get the job done. In fact, who I was, that definition of “me”, was almost always completely irrelevant, and in some cases, detrimental to the job, so I didn’t have one.

“I AM ___________________” I struggled to fill in the blank! And no matter how hard I tried to “do” this, I couldn’t. And I cried some more!

But gently, these amazing, caring women kept encouraging me.

They asked me questions like “what are you passionate about?”, “what traits do you wish your best friend had?”, “what traits do you value in a boss?” and “what makes you smile?”. They gave me lists of words to describe myself to help— caring, kind, energetic, gleeful, humble, proud, dynamic, passionate. I still struggled—this language was so foreign to me! I’d never before given myself permission to ask myself these questions, let alone answer them.

These amazing women taught me new skills, guided me through meditations, coached me into using a journal, and supported me to gain present moment awareness, all to help me connect with my feelings. I began to identify what really mattered to me. Slowly the process brought me closer to the things that touch my heart and fill my soul to this day.

Slowly, I began to form a vague outline, a somewhat blurry vision and the beginnings of a definition of “me”.

And yet I still didn’t truly understand. I thought I was ready to go back to DO some more! Armed with this definition of “me”, I went right back to work “doing” to figure out how “to be”.

So back to Webster I went…

To BE is defined as:

to exist
to live
to become

And suddenly, it all made sense…so simply, so perfectly, that I laughed out loud!

I laughed, not because it was funny, but because, all this time I had been so consumed by this notion that I had to “do” something, I hadn’t seen what was there all along.

I exist.
I live.
I become my true self simply by being.

I had “IT” even before I began seeking.

I always had, and will continue to have, “IT” all, I just didn’t know “IT”.

My “IT” is “ME”.

And, one of the biggest secrets of all…

I didn’t have to “DO” anything to get “IT”.

When you come right down to it, the secret of having it all is loving it all.--Joyce Brothers

Trust “IT”, Honor “IT”, Love “IT” and don’t be afraid to share “IT” with the world!

Can Creativity and Discipline Co-Exist?

For the past few years, my personal mission has been to present my most authentic self to world each and every day. My authentic self is my most creative self, and yet, seemingly in contradiction to my mission, I am a successful operations manager now committed to the life of an entrepreneur as a business consultant.

As I counted my blessings in 2008 and set goals for 2009 I kept hearing the question – how do I honor and integrate my creative side with the discipline I know it takes to grow a small business and to lead a fulfilled and happy life?

And how can I help the passionate women I know answer the same question?

One thing is very clear—“disciplined” does not typically make the list of words any one would use to describe me. Self-discovery, for me, is all about creating, allowing, and exploring in a pure, natural flow. Professionally, I support current management philosophies that encourage the creative process in problem solving. I explore myself each day by writing in a journal, sometimes sketching in it, too.

If I commit to that activity each day, isn’t that a routine even if I don’t do it at exactly 7 am each morning? Doesn’t that take discipline?

And doesn’t writing engage my creativity?

And if I ask myself two simple questions each day, without fail, and focus on the answers, doesn’t that take discipline, too?

In my ongoing practice of self-discovery I have learned to uncover limiting beliefs, and certainly identifying myself as not having discipline is one of those.

So, what is this thing, called discipline, I don’t think I have, anyway?

Dictionary.net gave me these clues:
1. Subjection to rule; submissiveness to order and control; habit of obedience.

Now I see why this word evokes some repulsion.
Rules, submissiveness, control and obedience…these words are the epitome of anti-creative and do nothing to support imagination, inspiration and innovation, signature traits of the entrepreneurial spirit.

And aren’t the best leaders those that “think outside the box”, sometimes bending the rules? Certainly, being submissive never got anyone recognized for his or her contribution to an organization. Aren’t most breakthroughs born of some form of disobedience?

But as I read on, this came next:
2. To accustom to regular and systematic action; to bring under control so as to act systematically; to train to act together under orders; to teach subordination to; to form a habit of obedience in; to drill.Ok, so the “obedience” thing still makes me tense, but now I’m getting closer to a definition I can appreciate and embrace…to accustom to regular and systematic action; to bring under control as to act systematically.

And then:
Discipline aims at the removal of bad habits and the substitution of good ones, especially those of order, regularity, and obedience. –C. J. Smith.

Now I get it—being a creative soul does not require me to live in chaos!

Order and regularity can be the foundation for the serenity that provides me the freedom to create. Out of simple systematic processes will come the moments of inspiration that are the new programs of my future. And simple, regular, disciplined actions taken will propel me toward my vision and goals.

I will grow a successful small business teaching others how to integrate simple, disciplined processes into their lives, so that their creativity will flourish and allow them to grow, too. I engage my creative side “playing” regularly at my favorite creative re-use center, Trash2Treasurefl.org. Recently I re-arranged my workspace to support my visual inspiration.

And to support my ideal life, and create new habits, I developed a program I am now calling “The Personal Strategic Plan for the Wise Well Woman™”. And it’s working!

So, do creativity and discipline co-exist in your life? Share your thoughts with me…I’d love to hear them.

In the spirit of wisdom, wellness and prosperity…
